Described as a ‘real mezzo soprano’, Maria Zoi is praised by critics for her versatility, wide vocal range and unique voice timbre.
Originally coming from Greece she is pursuing an international operatic career based in both London and New York. Ms Zoi is a graduate of the University of Music and Performing Arts (Munich, Germany), where she earned the highest qualification degree Meisterklasse Gesang (2015).
On stage she has compellingly portrayed several roles of the lyric mezzo-soprano repertoire like Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia/Rossini); Dorabella (Cosi fan tutte/Mozart); Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro/Mozart); Prince Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus/Strauss); and Flora Bervoix (La Traviata/Verdi). She has appeared in various freelance productions in Germany, Austria and with the Greek National Opera. Recent operatic credits include performances with The Metropolitan Opera Guild, Teatro Grattacielo New York and Opera at Florham NJ.
On the concert platform Ms Zoi has accumulated significant experience and performed in several distinguished venues, including: Gasteig, Munich; Kongresshalle, Nuremberg; Ancient Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Athens; Ephesus Ancient Theatre, Turkey; Concert Hall (Aula) of Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich; Greek National Opera; Megaron/Athens Concert Hall; Royal Theatre of Thessaloniki; Vienna City Hall; Concert Hall Baden am Wien; Auditorium Pedrotti Pesaro, Italy; Lincoln Center - Rose Building Auditorium, NY; National Opera America Center, NY; Hebrew Union College, NY among others.
Ms Zoi has performed as a soloist with the Nuernberger Symphoniker and with almost all important Symphony Orchestras of her native country: Greek National Radio Symphony Orchestra; State Orchestra of Thessaloniki; City of Thessaloniki Symphony Orchestra; City of Athens Symphony Orchestra. Her career also encompasses Lied and Chamber Music in various recitals with acclaimed accompanists, as well as with Kammerorchester Orpheus Wien and Chamber Music Hellas USA. In 2013 she founded, managed and performed in a Chamber Music ensemble called Polytropon with the aim of spreading Greek Art Music across Europe. During two artistic seasons the ensemble performed at several distinguished venues, mainly in Germany and Austria, receiving critical acclaim.
Her warm and deep voice with the remarkable flexibility to move from the upper to the lower register (Evening Post, Athens) has also been recognised on the competition circuit. In 2019 Ms Zoi won third prize in the Edward M. Murray International Opera Competition of Opera Ithaca NY. She has also been awarded a scholarship for the Bayreuth Festival from the Richard Wagner Association of the city of Duesseldorf in 2016.
An important milestone in her career occurred in January 2019 when Maestro Jose Carreras selected her amongst a few talented young opera singers from all over the world to take part in his 4th International Singing Masterclass in Pesaro, Italy. She was one of the Finalists and the only mezzo soprano chosen by Carreras to sing alongside him in the final concert at Auditorium Pedrotti. In an interview with Il Resto del Carlino newspaper Maestro Carreras expressed his conviction that she will have a promising operatic career.
Before committing to her operatic career, Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis discovered Ms Zoi's natural vocal gift at the age of fifteen. She took part in numerous concerts and recordings interpreting works by Theodorakis and was regarded as one of the most authentic interpreters of his music and one of Greece's greatest voices.
Besides Music Ms Zoi has also studied Communication & Mass Media at the National University of Athens and was involved in cultural journalism.
